Words of the Year for 2018

“This is your very first post.” – It’s amazing how starting (or restarting, yet again) something new can be intimidating.  Those six little words have been staring at me for a few weeks now as I have been trying to start down the blogging path again.  I’ve blogged in various places on and off for the last several years, but never consistently in my own space.  And trying to determine what to write about for “my very first post”, seemed overwhelming.  What would I possibly have to write about that anyone else would want or need to read?  So I kept putting off this first post.  And then January 1st rolled around.  The season of new beginnings and fresh starts.  I’ve seen lots of folks posting about their word of the year.  I’ve never been inclined to choose my own word, because I’m not one to make resolutions.  But goals….and reflection….and growth.  These things have been speaking to me as I find myself in my 21st year of education.

And so, here we are.  Perhaps it’s not just one word for me this year, but as I watch my career continue to unfold (and of course I keep getting older), I feel the need to be more intentional in my growth and reflection as well as my learning.  So…ShiftEd Life is born.  Strange name for a blog perhaps, but for me it encompasses my professional and personal world.  I have a picture hanging in my office of old typewriter keys and in the center is the ‘Shift’ key.  It stares at me across my desk everyday and I am reminded that so much of my professional life is a continuous shift – especially in the realm of educational technology.  I am trying to shift teachers’ and leaders’ thinking about technology in the classroom.  I work on projects in our district to try to shift how we do education to be more meaningful.  In my personal life as a mom, I constantly have to shift my thinking and my approach as my children grow older.  Life it seems has one constant, and that is change.  And so I must continue to learn, grow and reflect so I can make the shifts I need to make in education and in life.  ShiftEd Life will be glimpse in the journey of those three things – learning, growth and reflection.  I hope you’ll join me from time to time so we can shift together.
